April 2023 Reads
What a weird reading month this was. DNF is a popular term in the bookstagram world that stands for ‘Did Not Finish.’ There are people who have a really hard time not finishing a book they start and then there are those people, like me, who DNF freely. Sometimes I wonder if I quit too quickly because they are certainly examples of books that I have pushed through and loved but I also know that I make more time for books I will love by putting down books that aren’t capturing me. All this is to say that I had countless DNFs this month but when I look at this collection I also read so many books that I loved. Details below!
APRIL READS
How We Disappeared by Jing-Jing Lee- I am a huge @readwithtoni fan girl. She has an amazing ability to find backlist titles that I never heard of and bring to them to light. How We Disappeared tells the story of the Japanese occupation of Singapore and the ripple effects this time in history had on many people. While fiction, I learned so much about a period of history that was embarrassingly absent from my formal education.
Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret. by Judy Blume- I re-read this favorite in anticipation of attending a screening and discussion with Judy Blume and Kelly Fremon Craig, director of the movie version of Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret. I remembered both loving the book and all the talk about periods and boobs. What I had forgotten was all the talk of religion. This book is worth a re-read if you, like me, haven’t read it in decades!
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. This book has been everywhere for ages and I have started and stopped it a couple of times. But… recently, quite a few of my bookish friends who are typically much more intellectual and thoughtful readers than I am, read and loved this book. They loved it so much that they went on to the next in the series. So… I decided it was time to jump in! I started this book in print and it didn’t capture me immediately so I switched to audio and wow!!! I loved it!
When Two Feathers Fell from the Sky by Margaret Verble- This was my Fiction Matters book club book this month and as often happens, I went into book club liking the book and came out of book club loving the book. Reading in community for the win yet again!
